The Virtues of Allah’s sacred month of Muharram

Allah’s sacred month of Muharram is a blessed and important month. It is the first month of the Hijri calendar and is one of the four sacred months concerning which Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so it was ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein…” [al-Tawbah 9:36]

Fasting on The Day of Arafah

The Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace upon him, was asked about fasting on The Day of ‘Arafah. (He, prayers and peace upon him, replied): Fasting on the day of ‘Arafah is an expiation of last year’s and next year’s sins.’ [Collected by Muslim/#1162] What is ‘Arafah? Arafah is a well-known place related to the rites of Ḥajj, and standing at ‘Arafah is a pillar of Hajj (i.e. it is something that the pilgrim must do). The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Hajj is ‘Arafah.’ What is The Day of ‘Arafah? The Day of ‘Arafah is the ninth of Thul Ḥijjah according to the Islamic calendar. It has been named The Day of ‘Arafah because it is the day when all pilgrims stand at ‘Arafah. If a Muslim is performing Ḥajj, does he or she fast The Day of ‘Arafah?: Ṣaliḥ al-Fawzan wrote: Prophetic guidance teaches us that it is not recommended for a pilgrim standing at ‘Arafah (i.e. performing Ḥajj) to fast. This is because the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace upon him, did not fast while standing at ‘Arafah. The reason that he, prayers and peace upon him, did not fast is so that he would have strength to stand and supplicate whilst at ‘Arafah. So, it is not from the way of the Prophet for a pilgrim to fast on The Day of ‘Arafah. Rather, from his way is not to fast on that day (i.e. if one is a pilgrim performing Ḥajj). Fasting six days of Shawwaal

Abdullaah bin Saalih Al-Fawzaan | Ahaadeeth As-Siyaam: Ahkaam wa Adaab (pg. 27-29)

[blockquote]Abu Hurairah (radyAllaahu ‘anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: "Every deed of the Son of Aadam will be rewarded ten to seven hundred times its worth. Allaah, Mighty and Sublime, said: 'Except for the fast, for indeed it is for Me, and I will reward it. He leaves off his desires and his food for My sake. There are two times of joy for the one fasting. The time of joy when he breaks his fast and the time of joy when he meets His lord. And the scent coming from the mouth of the one fasting is more pleasant in the sight of Allaah than the smell of musk.'" [1][/blockquote]

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets and Chief of the Messengers, and upon all his family and companions.

Righteous Deeds with the Same Reward as Hajj and Umrah

1- Reciting Zikr after the five daily prayers:

Abu Hurayrah narrated that a group of destitute people came to the Prophet, , and said, “O Messenger of Allaah, the wealthy people will have higher grades and will have permanent enjoyment in high levels in Paradise. They pray like us and fast as we do, but they have more money by which they perform the Hajj, ‘Umrah, participate in Jihaad and give in charity.”The Prophet, , replied:“Shall I not tell you something upon which if you acted you would catch up with those who have surpassed you? Nobody would surpass you and you would be better than the people amongst whom you live except those who would do the same. Say ‘Subhaan Allaah’, ‘Alhamdulillaah’ and ‘Allaahu Akbar’ thirty-three times each after every (compulsory) prayer.’" [Al-Bukhaari]
