There are several Islamic manners and types of good conduct that the Muslim wife is obliged to observe and practice, so that her marriage is built on strong foundations, and so that she becomes a good example for other Muslim women. These manners are among the righteous Islamic laws that are required from Muslim women and which will ensure a happy marriage if they implement and preserve them, Allah willing. These manners include staying at home and avoiding going out without the husband’s consent, {And stay quietly in your houses.} [33:33]. The wife is also obliged to protect her and her husband’s honor, {Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient (to Allah and to their husbands), and guard in the husband’s absence what Allah orders them to guard (e.g. their chastity, their husband’s property, etc.).} [4:34]. Hence, the righteous woman protects her honor and her husband’s possessions when he is not present. She also seeks to please him and bring happiness to his heart when he is at home. The Messenger of Allah, Salla Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam, said, “Should I tell you about your women from among the residents of Paradise: Al-Walood (who bears several children), Al-Wadood (who is kind and forbearing with her husband), who keeps tending to her husband’s needs, and who when he gets angry with her, she says, ‘By Allah! I will not taste sleep until you are pleased (with me).’” [Ad-Daraqutni]. Furthermore, when the Muslim wife departs her house for a need, she stays away from crowded places and does not seek her husband’s friends for her needs. Rather, she acts as if she was a stranger, so as not to create a familiarity with her husband’s friends. The Muslim wife also takes care of her home, and when a friend of her husband’s...

The subject of the status of women in Islam is frequently debated in the present time. This discussion is often shared by people of different backgrounds: communists, nationalists, secularists, etc.; and all claim that they are the only ones who seek to achieve what is beneficial and good for women. Yet, such partisan people introduce their own understanding when discussing this subject. They often embrace Christian or secular ideals and organizations that claim to seek what is the woman’s rightful status, in their continuing plot to destroy Islam by corrupting Muslim women and men. The enemies of Islam go even further in their plots to distort and then destroy Islam by frequently claiming that Islam does not give women an equal status with men and that Islam treats women as second class citizens. They also seek to destroy Islam by corrupting women and inciting rebellion against the Islamic moral code. Some of these misguided people know that Prophet Mohammad, Salla Allahu Alayhi Wasallam, once said, “I have not left a Fitnah (trial, test) after me greater than women for men.” [Ahmad]. Islam stresses the importance of women’s role in societies, for they are men’s wives, sisters, mothers and daughters. Islam gives each person his or her due rights, along with a reasonable set of responsibilities. Islam firmly disallows men from transgressing Allah’s appointed limits with regards their treatment of women. In this article, we will discuss the status of women in various civilizations, and then in Islam: 1 – Women’s status in ancient Greek culture: Women were despised and belittled in the Greek society, as the Greeks claimed that women are a part of Satan’s plots against mankind. Greek men used to buy and sell their women just as they would buy and sell material goods. Even Socrates, whom western philosophers...

By Shaykh ‘Abdul ‘Azeez Ibn Baaz (d.1420H) (rahimahullaah) [1] [blockquote]The secret of her importance lies in the tremendous burden and responsibility that is placed upon her, and the difficulties she has to shoulder – responsibilities and difficilties some of which not even a man bears.[/blockquote] The status of the Muslim woman in Islaam is a very noble and lofty one, and her effect is very great in the life of every Muslim. Indeed the Muslim woman is the initial teacher in building a righteous society, providing she follows the guidance from the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). Since adherence to the Qur`aan and the Sunnah distances every Muslim – male or female – from being misguided in any matter. The misguidance that the various nations suffer from, and their being deviated does not come about except by being far away from the path of Allaah – the Most Perfect, the Most High – and from what His Prophets and Messngers – may Allaah’s Peace and Prayers be upon them all – came with. The Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:“I am leaving behind you two matters, you will not go astray as long as you cling to them both, the Book of Allaah and my Sunnah.” [2] The great importance of the Muslim woman’s role – whether as wife, sister, or daughter, and the rights that are due to her and the rights that are due from her – have been explained in the noble Qur`aan, and further detailed of this have been explained in the purified Sunnah. The secret of her importance lies in the tremendous burden and responsibility that is placed upon her, and the difficulties she has to shoulder – responsibilities and difficilties some of which not even a...
